This class explores the language and techniques of watercolor painting from the figure. Students will paint using a variety of watercolor approaches derived from current and historical practice. As a medium that allows only a few corrections, the foundation of watercolor is essential. Students will learn the medium’s behavior on wet and dry paper and how to cause accidents without losing control, allowing the medium to express itself and create images that are alive. A variety of topics: drawing & painting; nudes & portrait, flesh tones, reserving white from the paper, volume, and color theory. The purpose is to build three-dimensionality from a flat surface, providing life to the human form.Students will learn from cast figures, nudes from old masters paintings, pictures, self-portraits, and zoom live models. We will be working through a series of activities, beginning with a series of quick gestural studies and progressing to longer paintings. There will be daily lectures, demonstrations, exercises, and one-on-one guidance. The object is to win the confidence and obtain definitive results in this unforgiven technique.
Marcelo is excited to present this unique class over the online video conferencing platform Zoom. Marcelo will have one camera fixed on his painting and palette (right on his hands) and one camera on him as he works. Students will get closer than ever to Marcelo’s process.
